The History of Beaded Purses

Beaded bags first became popular in the 1920’s. They were knit, crocheted or woven and were a necessary accessory for both formal and informal occasions.

The bags were usually made of cotton or silk twisted yarn and beads imported from Europe. Some were embellished with ornate frames and chains.  Others were hung from a simple cord or drawstring made from the silk or cotton.

Today beaded purses are enjoying a return to popularity and are available in many new designs as well as adaptations from antique patterns. Many people are restoring antique purses and a new interest in duplicating the ornate frames used in the past.

I have chosen to adapt or create new versions of these wonderful old purses. Each one is custom hand knit for the buyer and created to be an heirloom piece for the future.
